Experiences
The Big Five with expert guides
From the Great Migration in the Serengeti and Maasai Mara to mokoro trips in the Okavango and gorilla treks in Rwanda, we design safaris around the wildlife you dream of seeing, the season and the style of camp that suits you.
A safari is less a single activity than a way of living for a few days: waking before dawn to the sounds of the bush, heading out while the air is still cool, and learning to read tracks, alarm calls and animal behavior with a guide who has spent years doing exactly that. It's the experience that brings most people to Africa for the first time, and the one that keeps bringing them back.
Every safari region has its own character. Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Maasai Mara share the Great Migration and some of Africa's densest predator populations. South Africa's Kruger region offers superb Big Five viewing with easy access. Botswana's Okavango Delta adds water-based safaris in exclusive concessions, and Zimbabwe is known for walking and canoe safaris with exceptional guides. In Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, trekking to mountain gorillas is an encounter unlike any other.
Timing shapes everything. Dry seasons usually bring the easiest game viewing, green seasons bring newborn animals, migratory birds and lower rates, and the Great Migration moves through the Serengeti and Mara in a yearly cycle. We'll explain the trade-offs honestly for your dates rather than promising any particular sighting, because wildlife is wild.
Safari stays range from classic tented camps with canvas walls to lodges with private plunge pools and wine cellars. Game drives are the heart of most days, but many areas also offer walking safaris, night drives, boat trips, horseback rides and hot-air balloon flights. Private vehicles, family-friendly camps and photography-focused guides can all be arranged.
We start with what you most want to see and feel, then match regions, seasons and camps to your budget and pace, balancing road transfers with light-aircraft flights so you spend your time watching wildlife rather than sitting in transit. Browse our Serengeti + Zanzibar and Kenya Safari Adventure journeys for inspiration. Every journey is customizable.
Early mornings, long lunches
Game drives typically run at dawn and in the late afternoon, when animals are most active, with time to rest at camp in the midday heat.
Expert guides and trackers
Professional guides interpret behavior, tracks and ecology, and in many private areas a tracker reads the signs from the front of the vehicle.
More than game drives
Depending on the area, add walking safaris, night drives, mokoro or boat trips, balloon flights, or gorilla and chimpanzee treks.
Camps with character
Stays range from classic tented camps to luxury lodges, many of them unfenced, with meals and activities often included.
Honest expectations
Sightings are never guaranteed. We choose areas and seasons that give you the best odds and explain what's realistic.
Light-aircraft hops
Many safaris link camps by small aircraft, with luggage limits of about 15 to 20 kilograms (33 to 44 pounds) in soft bags.
First-time visitors to Africa, wildlife photographers, families with children old enough to enjoy long drives, and anyone who has dreamed of seeing lions, elephants or gorillas in the wild.
