Experiences
Living traditions and ancient wonders
Walk among the pyramids and the temples of the Nile, lose yourself in Morocco's medinas, learn from Maasai and Amazigh hosts, and trace the history of Carthage, Great Zimbabwe and Stone Town with guides who bring each story to life.
Africa holds some of humanity's oldest stories, from fossil sites that trace our earliest ancestors to the monuments of the pharaohs and the medieval cities of the Maghreb. It is also a continent of living cultures, with well over a thousand languages and countless traditions of music, craft, food and faith, and those are best experienced through the people who carry them forward.
In Egypt, the Pyramids of Giza, the temples of Luxor and the tombs of the Valley of the Kings reveal a civilization that flourished for thousands of years. Tunisia's Carthage, El Djem and Dougga preserve the grandeur of Roman Africa, while Great Zimbabwe, a monumental stone city built between the 11th and 15th centuries, shows the sophistication of southern Africa's medieval kingdoms. In Tanzania, Olduvai Gorge is one of the key sites in the story of human origins.
Culture here is not behind glass. In Fes and Marrakech, master artisans still work leather, copper and wood in the medina, and in the High Atlas, Amazigh families welcome walkers for mint tea. On the Swahili coast, Stone Town tells the story of centuries of Indian Ocean trade, while the morna songs and live music of Cabo Verde show the creative fusion of Africa and Portugal. Across East Africa, visits to Maasai and Samburu communities, arranged with care, offer insight into pastoral life and conservation.
Some of the most important cultural experiences are also the most sobering. Robben Island and the Apartheid Museum in South Africa, the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Rwanda, the site of Zanzibar's last slave market and Cidade Velha in Cabo Verde help travelers understand histories that continue to shape the continent.
We work with expert local guides, from Egyptologists and historians to artisans and community hosts, and build in time for conversation, not just sightseeing. We look for community-run and locally owned experiences that benefit hosts directly. Start with our Morocco Medina + Desert or Egypt Nile + Pyramids journeys, and we'll tailor the rest.
