An elephant family with calves crosses a dusty track in Amboseli, Kenya, the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro on the horizon

Amboseli National Park

Elephants beneath Kilimanjaro

Amboseli is famous for its large elephant families, framed on clear days by the snowcapped summit of Kilimanjaro across the Tanzanian border. Swamps fed by mountain springs keep wildlife here even in the driest months.

Few safari scenes are as instantly recognizable as a line of elephants crossing Amboseli's plains with Kilimanjaro rising behind them. The mountain stands across the border in Tanzania, but from this compact Kenyan park at its northern foot it dominates the southern horizon, especially at dawn and in the late afternoon, when the clouds that often cloak it during the day tend to clear.

Water in a dry land

The park's name is often traced to a Maa word for "salty dust," and much of Amboseli is an ancient lakebed of fine volcanic soil. Yet at its heart lie lush swamps, fed by rain and snowmelt that filter underground from Kilimanjaro and emerge as springs. These permanent wetlands draw elephants, buffalo, hippos and a wealth of water birds even at the height of the dry season.

Elephant country

Amboseli's elephants are among the most closely studied in Africa, thanks to decades of research, and many family groups are remarkably relaxed around vehicles. Watching a matriarch lead her family into the swamps, calves splashing behind, is a highlight of any Kenyan safari. Lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, giraffes, zebras and wildebeest also live here, and a short climb up Observation Hill gives a panoramic view over the swamps and plains.

Conservancies and communities

The park is surrounded by Maasai group ranches and community conservancies that provide vital corridors for elephants moving between Amboseli, Tsavo and the Kilimanjaro foothills. Staying in one of these conservancies allows walking safaris, night drives and a deeper understanding of how Maasai communities and wildlife share the land.

How we plan Amboseli

Two or three nights here combine well with the Maasai Mara, Laikipia or the coast, and we'll time your game drives for the best chance of a clear view of the mountain.

The dry seasons, from about June to October and again in January and February, are best. Wildlife concentrates around the swamps, and skies are often clear enough for good views of Kilimanjaro, especially early and late in the day.

The long rains, usually from late March to May, and the shorter rains in November turn the plains green and bring wonderful birdlife, but some tracks become muddy and the mountain is more often hidden in cloud. Days are warm and nights cool throughout the year.

Getting there

Amboseli is roughly four to five hours by road from Nairobi, mostly on the paved highway toward the Tanzanian border, with the final stretch on park and community roads.

Scheduled light-aircraft flights from Nairobi's Wilson Airport reach airstrips in and around the park in about 45 minutes to an hour, and flights also link Amboseli with the Maasai Mara and other safari regions. Many travelers pair Amboseli with Tsavo or the Chyulu Hills, and it's also possible to continue overland into northern Tanzania via the Namanga border post.
