Stone Town & the Indian Ocean after safari
Four days to unwind after safari: a night in historic Stone Town, a spice farm visit, then two beach nights on the Indian Ocean with time to snorkel, sail or do nothing at all. Fitted around your main journey.
After the early starts and dusty tracks of a safari, a few days on Zanzibar feel like the perfect exhale. Flights from northern Tanzania and Kenya are short, so this extension slots neatly onto the end of an East African journey.
We like to begin with a night in Stone Town, the island's historic heart, where carved wooden doors, busy markets and rooftop cafés reflect centuries of Swahili, Omani, Indian and European influence. A local guide brings the lanes to life, including the sobering memorial on the site of the former slave market. On the way to the coast, a spice farm visit lets you taste cloves, cinnamon and fruit straight from the source.
Then it's time for the beach. Zanzibar's coasts are quite different from one another, and choosing the right one matters. The north has good swimming at most tides and lively sunsets; the east has wide tidal lagoons, quieter villages and steady winds that suit kitesurfing. We'll match the hotel and coast to the way you like to relax, and suggest a snorkeling trip or sunset dhow sail if you want a little activity.
Every trip is customizable, and this extension is a starting point rather than a fixed package. We'll tailor the dates, hotels, activities and pace around your main journey. Stay longer, skip Stone Town for more beach time, or upgrade to a villa with a private pool. Your travel designer will time your flights from the safari so the transition is easy, and you'll approve every detail before paying anything.
Every journey is customizable. Use our featured journeys as inspiration. We'll tailor the dates, hotels, activities, pace and budget around you.
A night in Stone Town
Sunset on the waterfront, street food at Forodhani Gardens and a guided walk through the old town.
A spice farm visit
Taste cloves, cinnamon, vanilla and tropical fruit on the farms that made Zanzibar famous.
Two nights on the beach
A coast and hotel chosen to match how you like to relax, from lively to secluded.
Reefs and dhows
Optional snorkeling over coral reefs or a sunset sail in a traditional wooden dhow.
A starting point, not a fixed schedule — we adjust every day to suit you.
Fly to Zanzibar from Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Nairobi or a safari airstrip, and transfer to Stone Town. As the day cools, wander to the waterfront for sunset and the Forodhani Gardens food stalls.
Walk Stone Town's lanes with a local guide, from the Old Fort and the Darajani market to the memorial on the site of the former slave market. After a spice farm visit with lunch, continue to your beach hotel on the coast.
Spend the day as you please: snorkel over a nearby reef, sail in a dhow at sunset or book a massage. From the northeast coast, boat trips reach the reefs around Mnemba Atoll, where dolphins and turtles are sometimes seen.
Enjoy a last swim before your transfer to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. We time the transfer to your onward flight so you are never rushed.
A few of the ways travelers tailor this journey:
Stay longer on the beach
Add nights to turn a short extension into a real beach vacation.
Choose your coast
The north suits swimming at most tides; the east has tidal lagoons, quieter villages and kitesurfing winds.
Book a private dhow
Charter a traditional dhow for a sunset sail or a day of snorkeling on your own schedule.
Upgrade to a pool villa
Choose a villa with its own plunge pool for more privacy on a honeymoon or special occasion.
Skip the city
Prefer pure beach time? Go straight to the coast and visit Stone Town as a day trip instead.
